Sad to see the independents go but that's been the case for the last 30 years. I know several of you remember the ID top 100 distributor list each year when companies other that Sysco were at top. That whole report became obsolete in the very early 90's

Gordon Food Service, which acquired Ettline Foods Corp. in October, announced the closing of Ettline’s former Spring Garden Township-based center at 525 N. State St. The company will begin dismissing employees from the center March 23 and plans on having the facility entirely closed by June 15.

According to a notice filed by Gordon Foods under the Worker Adjustment and Notification Act, or WARN Act, the layoffs will impact 64 employees including administrative, distribution and inside sales staff.

The remaining 70 staff, representing transportation and outside sales staff,  will work out of a regional branch elsewhere in York County, according to Gordon Foods spokesman Deb Abraham.

Abraham encouraged staff impacted by the change to seek employment at the company's distribution center in Aberdeen, Md., which will serve clients currently served by the York County location once the latter closes.

Gordon Food is a food distributor based in Grand Rapids, Mich. The company has distribution sites in 10 states and Canada, including a distribution center in Findlay Township in Allegheny County. Gordon Food also operates a chain of membership-based food service stores with three locations in Allegheny County and one in Westmoreland County.

Ettline was acquired by Gordon Foods in the fall.

Ettline had operated since 2004 under an employee stock ownership plan. Under such plans, employees gradually receive stock from the company, which typically must be purchased by the company upon their departure

Here is another 120 lost jobs from GFS from late 2016.

All 120 employees of the Gordon Food Service’s Pottsville Distribution Center at Highridge Business Park will lose their jobs.

The facility is closing, according to a letter from Tim Fatum, senior manager at human resources with Gordon Food Service Inc. to Danette Lay, division chief of operations for the state Department of Labor & Industry.

“The company expects to begin eliminating positions on Nov. 5, 2016, and will continue in phases until complete closure on Jan. 18, 2017,” the Aug. 3 letter states.

You quite right, Sidney.  I don't know where you are/were based, but handling business in the mid-Atlantic area, and going from memory there, these are some majors that were "absorbed" in one fashion or another that used to make that ID list:

Atlantic, Continental(Baltimore), Tartan, Sandler, Roanoke Restaurant, Doughtie's, Mazo Lerch, JP, PYA Monarch, etc....
