Hey guys,

Anyone hearing anything about the Store division of GFS?  I have had lots less pressure on the street from them as they seem to be going all retail.

any insight?  they looking to sell that division off or something?   I know they have partnered with Lipari for delivery to their stores.. seems weird.

The store division is in shambles right now. They got a new president straight from Kroeger that knows nothing about food service distribution. I just left the company because they are trying to compete with other grocery stores and could care less about the impact on independent restaurants.

Not even Kroger. He was part of the Mariano’s chain that got bought out by Kroger and probably cleanedbgouse - him included.

He hires all his old Mariano lackeys that don’t fit the culture. ( lots of really inappropriate stories I heard from the west side of the state )

Yes that is correct. He thinks he can turn the store division into a Marianos or higher end grocery store. He is bringing in so many products from Lipari (1000 plus when I left) that are not competitive in price. The problem is, our retail business was not growing. Our Memorial day and Fourth of July ads were the worst I have seen(sales wise) since I started 6 years ago. You are also correct that Tim is bringing in his cronies from Marianos. The nepotism is rampant there. I've seen so many qualified internal hires passed up for his rude and under qualified picks. It is disgusting what he is doing to that division.

Smart and Final in California has changed their focus from foodservice to small business and little leagues (soccer, football and baseball). They can't compete with Restaurant Depot and Costco Business.

They are also competing with regular retail supermarkets. A much better fit for them.
