Anyone hear anything confirming or scuttling the rumor that UniPro and Progressive Group Alliance have merged or are about to merge?

PFG has joined UniPro effective 2/1/09.  Not sure what this gives PFG other than a more complicated earned income stream.  Manufactures will continue to have UniPro and PFG programs.  I bet it will actually dilute manufactures doing more with UniPro as they will still have to pay to play at PFG.

Members are still  voting  if they will let ProGroup members in

Can't imagine either independent group members will be thrilled with the overlap.

This might be good for some of the smaller second- and third-tier distributors if they join forces to form bigger companies with more coverage. They would be able to provide more items for their customers.

Unfortunately my question is serious but the source I heard it from is questionable.  There probably is no merit to the rumor but these days you never know.  Take it for what its worth.

If true, no more Hormel, Farmland or John Morrell pork products. No more 50# lard.

Unipro now has more purchasing power than Sysco. All Unipro is is a group of independently owned operations that buy in for the purchasing power. Same as a restaurant group joining forces for better prices.

Exsellcior, don't discount Uni-Pro members. Many of them are large players in their markets (Goldberg & Solovy and Jordano's in So Cal). Both are over $100 million in sales. Most, if not all, are non-union. They don't have the overhead or corporate layers that Sysco and USF have. This allows them to sell at a lower cost than the Big Two, and make a nice profit.

FSVET I agree, guess i wasnt clear. I was saying they are a major player now. Not having to answer to shareholders is a major advantage for these companies. I know that with Quandt's coming on board and Ginsberg in NY not to mention Restaurant Depot the uni-pro members are a serious presence in the industry. I am curious to see what happens. I'm with the big boys right now but shopping around after witnessing the reaction to slow markets in a corporate house. It isn't pretty...

When you look at the big picture the Uni-Pro merger make great sense! ProGroup was essentially on the DNR list from PFG! They lost or were in the process of losing most of the big boys in the group. The loss of Cheney Bros. Jordano's and others to Uni-Pro began the spiral. The management at Pro-Group just sat around and let it happen. A perfect example was their web site. It had not been updated for well over a year. I now wonder waht will become of the small & medium sized distributors (those in the $15-35M volume) only time will tell. George Holm will not not only run PFG but in effect Uni-Pro as well!

Taz, the small and medium sized companies that you speak of will probably join the Frosty Acres Brand co-op as they continue to grow unnoticed.

To CheshireCat,

To me FAB is trouble as well! That only have 3 - 4 large distributors (Affiliated Foods, Merchants, Pocono Produce and CD Hartnett) the remainder of the roster is made up of 8-30M family businesses. Additionally they focus on the C-Store segment. The regional sales managers are mostly overstated CSR's and are not aggressive at all in adding distributors. One strength they have is Taylor Made, their answer to national accounts. Interesting is one the major Taylor Made  companies is J Kings a Uni-Pro member ( a real powerhouse in New York).

It will be interesting to see how things progress with PFG dominating Uni-Pro!
